Whitney Houston 1963-2012

Whitney was an amazing person. She had such a beautiful voice and was lucky enough to become famous and be recorded so we can remember her forever in song and film. The irony of her life was her hit the Greatest Love of All. It talks about the “beauty we possess inside”, “at least I live as I believe”, and “find your strength in love.” But, Whitney did not have the strength to say no to drugs and alcohol, to stay away from abusive people, and to see the beauty she possessed inside.

I am sure she is in God’s loving arms now for the inspiration she left us in her music. God bless you Whitney.

Greatest Love of All

I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children’s laughter remind us how we used to be
Everybody searching for a hero
People need someone to look up to
I never found anyone who fulfilled my needs
A lonely place to be
And so I learned to depend on me

I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone’s shadow
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I’ll live as I believe
No matter what they take from me
They can’t take away my dignity
Because the greatest love of all
Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all

I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children’s laughter remind us how we used to be

I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone’s shadow
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I’ll live as I believe
No matter what they take from me
They can’t take away my dignity
Because the greatest love of all
Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all

And if by chance, that special place
That you’ve been dreaming of
Leads you to a lonely place
Find your strength in love.

Martin Luther King, Jr. “I Have a Dream” Speech

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of the most powerful speakers of all time. Listen to his full I Have a Dream speech video on YouTube to see for yourself. I believe most people have never heard the beginning of the speech, so I recommend listening to the whole speech. However, if you are just interested in the “I Have a Dream” part, it starts around 12:20.

Dr. King emulated the teachings of Jesus, especially the non-violent methods presented at the Sermon on the Mount that we have been learning about in the Gospel according to Matthew. He had such power, such conviction, to stand up for what he believed in, to give the ultimate sacrifice – now that is truly living!

I am not sure what Dr. King would think about his dream 59 years later. The drum major was shot down five years after this speech and no one could really fill the same role after. He would likely be happy the Obamas are in the White House, but still unsatisfied with the conditions of our inner-cities and lost dreams of many. There is so much potential. You just have to believe.

Dalai Lama’s “Beyond Religion” book

Martin Sheen narrates the Dalai Lama’s new book Beyond Religion: Ethics for a Whole World.  The Dalai Lama is a modern-day prophet who transcends all religions and “is a reflection of the Gospels” according to Sheen.  Read the whole Book Talk: Sheen “nourished” by narrating Dalai Lama’s book story at Reuters.

Note: the Reuters story includes a free download of the Dalai Lama’s book from Audible.com until December 20th. I plan to listen to his book.

Saint Francis of Assisi

Saint Francis lived in Italy during the Dark Ages from 1182 to 1226. He was born into wealth and lived a carefree adolescence singing with the troubadours. After a couple stints of military duty, a serious illness, and a vision of Jesus telling him to repair his church which was falling into ruin, Saint Francis renounced his wealth, became a beggar, preached in the streets, and repaired old churches.

Many people followed Saint Francis and he ultimately established the Franciscan Order. As his health declined and his eyesight progressively worsened, he returned to his ascetic life in a hut and communed with nature. Birds were said to have landed on his arms and eaten from his hands. Later in life during a 40-day fast, he received the stigmata, wounds on his wrists, ankles, head and side that mimicked those of Christ. Learn more about Saint Francis of Assisi at Wikipedia.

Why is St. Francis one of my favorite people? To the dismay of his family and friends, Saint Francis renounced his wealth and did what Jesus called him to do. He accepted a hard life, one of an ascetic and his health suffered for it, but also a life of great purpose. This simple man initiated an order of the church that continues to do great things even to this day – 785 years after his death. Everything that Saint Francis did was out of love, so much so that even animals did not fear him.  He is considered the patron saint of animals and the environment.

So, when people question what you are doing with your life, even if it flies in the face of convention, tell them the story of Saint Francis. Follow Christ’s example and you too can make a difference for hundreds of years to come, even if just through your own family. Use the lyrics of the Prayer of Saint Francis to guide you.

Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa was a Catholic girl born in Albania who asked to be sent to India  to serve the poorest of the poor after her 18th birthday in 1928. She became a nun there and established the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta years later. As of her death in 1997, there were 610 missions in 123 countries (more in 133 countries now) that provide home for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis, plus hospices services. They also help families with food, schooling, and counseling (See full Mother Teresa story at Wikipedia).

A woman under five-feet tall, Mother Teresa was a giant in making a positive difference in the world. She even won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. Her secret to success was having a mission in life that no one, not even a Pope, could deter. I read a story once of how she pushed the Catholic Church over years into allowing her new order in Calcutta.

Why is Mother Teresa one of my favorite people? She showed that one person can make a tremendous difference in this world by having a great vision for people to rally around and a lifelong commitment to making it happen. She displayed unconditional love to people in the worst conditions of the world. She did not judge. She just pushed on and expected God to provide – and He did! Her selflessness moved the world’s morale needle in a positive direction over the periods of the Great Depression, World War II, and all the dramatic world events from the 1950s to the 1990s.

I could only hope to be one millionth of the goodness that she was. She was beatified as Blessed Teresa of Calcutta in 2003 on her way to sainthood.

MLK Memorial

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial was dedicated in Washington, D.C. yesterday (10/16/2011). I’m writing about this event since Dr. King has been one of my heroes. He fought for freedom in America and is a symbol of standing up, in a non-violent way, for what is right.

I was surprised to see a sculpture so stubborn, almost angry with crossed arms and a slightly furrowed brow, in a Stone of Hope when I always thought of Dr. King as a beacon of hope, more like a lighthouse or the eternal flame at President John F. Kennedy’s Memorial (see Washington Post MLK Memorial picture). I thought I would see something like Dr. King giving the I Have A Dream speech, showing the great orator passionately insisting that each person act, through non-violence, to uphold freedom and justice for all people (see MLK I Have A Dream picture).
